Mossimo – from humble beginnings to global success
Armed with an infallible entrepreneurial spirit, Mossimo Gianulli began making beach volleyball shorts which he sold along Newport Beach, California. The shorts became so popular he made the passionate decision to fully invest and strategically develop his dream to bring quality surf and street wear to the world, and thus Mossimo Inc was born.
Beginnings, Growth, Change
From humble beginnings Mossimo the brand grew in popularity to become a symbol of youth culture in California and beyond. By selling exclusively to surf shops, come the end of Mossimo’s first year of production the company grossed 1 million dollars and in 1996 became a listed company.
In 1991, Mossimo expanded the line to include sweatshirts, knits and sweaters and by 1995, the collection included women’s clothing and men’s tailored suits and after only eight years in production, Mossimo had grown into a multi-million dollar lifestyle sportswear and accessories company, with its products sold all over the world including the USA, Australia, Europe, Japan and New Zealand.
The story of Mossimo is one of ongoing success and despite a decline in profitability and street credibility in 1996 the brand has emerged re-injected and infused with a new energy and distribution focus.
Mossimo explains the change clearly “From 1987 to 1996, we were on an absolute roll. Tons of profit, tons of growth… but we needed a stronger infrastructure to keep up.” The answer for Mossimo was to take up a product licensing agreement with a large multi national company, one capable of sustaining growth and meeting demand.
Enter Target with its global range of stores where consumers the world over can find Mossimo branded items that are stocked and sold exclusively through the chain.
